Tizi Ouzou is a city in north central Algeria. It is the capital and largest city of Tizi Ouzou Province. It is the second largest city in terms of population in the Kabylie region behind Béjaïa.
The name comes from the Berber language Tizi n Uzzu and is pronounced Tizuzzu, commonly Tizi which means the "hill", while Azzu means the "broom" (the preposition n "of" is not pronounced here). That is why the city is often referred to as "The hills of brooms".
Tizi Ouzou was established by the Ottomans, and was enlarged during the French period.[citation needed]
In the 1990s there was friction between the Berbers of Tizi Ouzou and the central authorities of Algiers.[citation needed]
Islamists looted, and burned to the ground, a Pentecostal church on 9 January 2010. The pastor was quoted as saying that worshipers fled when local police left a gang of local rioters unchecked.

This city is located in the heart of Kabylie. It is 102.36 square kilometres (39.52 sq mi) in area. Tizi Ouzou is located in the valley of Wadi Sébaou. It is surrounded by mountains. The city is at an altitude of 200 metres (660 ft). The city is bounded on the north by Mount Belloua which rises to 850 metres (2,790 ft) above sea level. A portion of the old city of Tizi Ouzou (known as the High City) backed the east slopes of the mountain. At the top of the mountain Belloua lies the village of Redjaouna. The latter is attached to the town of Tizi Ouzou.
There were 118,542 people in 1998.
The city is linked to Algiers and several towns, like Béjaïa, through a major road network.Because of congestion and traffic jams caused by cars crossing the town, a bypass road was built recently in order to circumvent Tizi Ouzou. The wilaya (province) of Tizi Ouzou is one of the wilayas of Algeria which has the largest fleet[citation needed]. Moreover, it is also one of wilayas which records the highest number of deaths on the road.
Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-Ouzou is the local university.
